In May 1981, Banastre Tarleton Band won a
three-month long KSHE (
St. Louis
) Radio sponsored “
Battle
of The Bands” held at Six Flags. Besides
cash and the proverbial plaque proclaiming their victory over 40+ bands, BTB
was awarded a slot on the annual KSHE Seeds album.
The music director at KSHE wanted the band to record “I’m
Wired” but because of the drug connotation the station’s board of
directors requested another song – one that was safe.
KSHE’s top DJ, Gary Kolander, chose “She’s My Favorite Girl,”
a Beatles-like pop rocker with an infectious hook and great dance beat.
The song was engineered by Tom Schulenburg at Technisonics Studio and
was pure magic. Banastre
released the tune as a single on Green Horse Records label at the same time
as KSHE made their Seeds LP available to the public.
“She’s My Favorite Girl” was one of the most requested tracks
on the record and eventually cracked Billboard’s Midwest Top 40 charts.
BTB’s lineup at this time included Richie Vann on lead guitar, Gary
Puff on rhythm guitar and backup vocals, drummer Fil DiMaggio and Mark
Brinkerhoff on bass. Banastre
sang inspired lead vocals, played grand piano, and helped with the
production of this classic Banastre Tarleton Band song.
